SPLENDID IVORY TANKARD WITH WILD BOAR HUNT. Wohl Erbach. Date: 1870's. Technique: Ivory. Description: Large hunting tankard with a surrounding sculptural depiction of a hunting scene with a herd of wild boars. The scene, rich in figures and movement, is worked with the highest level of artistry and is open-worked and free-plastic in parts. It shows a probably mythological representation with men in antique robes fighting a pack of wild boars between trees. A forest nymph is visible in one of the trees next to the handle. On the four volute feet alternating hunting dog and wild boar heads. The handle formed by a bearded man fighting with a bear standing on its hind legs. The lid with deer heads and the crowning figure of Diana, goddess of the hunt, riding a horse. Measurement: Height 48cm. Provenance: Private collection Baden-Württemberg. According to handwritten notes and oral tradition of the previous owners, this monumental hunting tankard was a gift from the imperial princes to Emperor Wilhelm I and came from the estate of Wilhelm II's second wife, Princess Schönaich-Carolath. The magnificent Kunstkammer object is said to have been created in 1872, after a working period of 12 months. Please note that this object is made of materials, for whose export into countries outside the EU contract area a permission due to Cites regulations is necessary. We point out that such a permission is usually not given. Estimated shipping costs for this lot: Arrangement after the auction.
