Japanese Hanging Scroll by Serizawa Keisuke (sealed) Honen Shonin. The subject is the famous Buddhist monk, Honen Shonin, the founder of the Japanese Buddhist sect of the Pure Land. His image is stencil printed onto fabric (silk) that is paper-backed. The scroll has blue & white porcelain ends and is in its original wooden box. To the top of the lid is written Katazome (stencil), Honenjonin (the Buddhist monk), Onei (portrait). The inside of the lid reads: 1951 Haru (Spring), Someko (stencil artist), Serizawa Keisuke, and the red seal used by him, often instead of a signature. Length of scroll 119cm (47 inches), width (not including scroll ends) 33cm (13 inches). Serizawa Keisuke (1895 ? 1984). Provenance: By repute, acquired direct from Serizawa in Japan during the 1950s by a friend of Brian Page. From the collection of the late Brian Page (1938-2018), the well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton.
