Giuseppe Fiocco attributed the present work to Giambattista Piazzetta, but this ascription was later refuted by Rodolfo Pallucchini. Ugo Ruggeri was the first to publish the work as a product of Giuseppe Angeli, noting its similarity to the sleeping Holofernes in the altar of Saint Gerolamo Emiliani in Santa Maria dei Derelitti (Ospedaletto) in Venice. As Mariana Mollenhauer de Hanstein has pointed out, this way of depicting Judith is also typical of Angeli, and thus comparison to the Ospedaletto panel of 1748 as well as the use of a reddish brown colour palette allow the present work to be dated to the late 1740s. Dimensions 85 x 84 cm Artist or Maker Giuseppe Angeli Medium Oil on canvas Literature Mariana Mollenhauer de Hanstein: Giuseppe Angeli und die venezianische Malerei des Settecento, Diss.
