Monogrammed lower right: NG The Greek painter Nikolaus Gysis studied at the Munich Academy from 1865, and was a master student of Karl Theodor von Piloty from 1868-1871. Our painting depicting the crucifixion of Christ on the hill Golgotha in the distance, illuminated by a ray of light, and a large crowd in the foreground, betrays Gysis´s characteristic colour palette and was probably executed around 1895, as the artist mentions drafts for a painting "Golgotha" in his notes for that year (Konstantinos Didaskalou: Genre- und allegorische Malerei von Nikolaus Gysis, Munich, p. 154). Dimensions 81 x 131 cm Artist or Maker Nikolaus Gysisi Medium Oil on canvas Provenance Rudolph Lepke´s Kunst-Auctions-Haus, Berlin (label on the stretcher). - Swedish private collction. - Auction Neumeister, Munich, 30.11.2011, lot 358. - North German private collection.
