A fine and important Indian Tulwar with a classical iron hilt of Lahuri type chiselled with flowers and florals in shallow relief with the standing surfaces gilded on a black background. the fine wootz blade is made by the famous maker Muhammad Baqir Mashhadi and bears his cartouche as well as the name of Safdar Jang, nawab of Awadh. The curved blade is c. 83 cm long. See the catalouqe "Fighting, Hunting, Impressing. Arms and Armour from the Islamic World 1500–1850" from the David Collection in Copenhagen by Kjeld von Folsach, Joachim Meyer and Peter Wandel page 130–131 where a Tulwar with the same blade is shown. Eight blades by Muhammad Baqir are known and all but one bears the name of Safdar Jang. Provenance: Danish private collection.
