József Koszta, Hungarian 1861 1949- Nature morte; oil on board, signed lower right, 23x33cm (ARR) Provenance: Offenbach-Main, Bidler Germany (according to the label on the reverse); Private Collection, Germany; thence by descent. Note: Mrs. Éva Ibos commented the following regarding the present work; "József Koszta started painting still lifes from around the 1910s, from then on this theme was continuous and emphatic part of his painting. His still lifes are never representative and usually depict his own puritan environment in the same way as he does in his works of the landscapes and people of the Great Hungarian Plain. In his still lifes he paints exclusively flowers, usually flowers blooming in the village courtyards. These paintings represent a sole vase standing on a horizontal lane (i.e. a tabletop) or crockery with a bouquet of flowers. He rarely uses more than one motif, but sometimes he enriches the composition with a bowl or a liquor bottle. The present work, in terms of style, possibly dates back to the second half of the 1920s. It is a Kosta work to the very core, one of his best, it is a spectacular example of his characteristic brushwork and his use of composition. The strong atmospheric effect of Kosta's works, the way he portrays an almost palpable, vibrant ambiance stems from his loose, organic, tiny brushstrokes, the dynamics of the painting are given by the rich texture of his typical glowing colours." (Mrs. Éva Ibos, September 2021) We are grateful to Mrs. Éva Ibos for her assistance in the cataloguing of the work. Please refer to department for condition report
