A paint on cloth thangka of green Amoghasiddhi Buddha dating from the 17th or 18th century. He sits in vajrasana on a lotus pedestal with his right hand in the abhaya mudra with his left hand in dhyana mudra. Wearing monastic robes and sporting an ushnisha, Amoghasiddhi is in his Buddha appearance. The lotus pedestal rests upon a three-tiered platform supporting ritual objects, and below the platform is a bowl of symbolic objects. Surrounding Amoghasiddhi are twenty-five Buddhas, most of which are repeated representations of the Five Symbolic Buddhas, of which Amoghasiddhi is a part. They reside on a green ground with some vine tracery. The thangka is mounted on a cloth backing. There are no marks on the back. Dimensions are: 23 inches tall X 12 1/2 inches wide, 58.4 cm X 31.8 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: There is significant, severe loss to the surface, as well as splitting to threads, repairs, and overpainting. There is also severe, pronounced staining throughout. A reminder that all lots are sold as-is. We have sought to record the changes in the condition of this piece after its initial manufacture as diligently as possible; however, as stated in our terms, condition reports are statements of opinion and not representations or warranties. Oakridge Auction Gallery bears no responsibility for any error or omission. Provenance: From Mrs. Fullerton in New Jersey. Her father, Maurice Etangs, was chief of police in Tianjin, China and lived there from 1935 to 1945. This lot was collected during that time. High resolution photos can be found here.
