A pair of framed Chinese embroidered ranking badges dating from the 19th century. Both badges feature a blue, flaming bear, denoting the fifth military rank. The bear's body faces left, while its head turns to look at the sun on the right. It stands over waves surrounded by bats, clouds, and Buddhist heavenly objects. The embroidery is done in the forbidden stitch. Dimensions are: 11 inches tall X 12 inches wide, 27.9 cm X 30.5 cm, while the frame measures 21 1/2 inches tall X 21 1/2 inches wide, 54.6 cm X 54.6 cm. All measurements are approximate.
