signed ZHANGSHANZI, inscribed, and with one seal of the artist dated Xinwei year(1931) ink and colour on paper, hanging scroll Zhang Shanzi was a Chinese painter known depictions of tigers amidst atmospheric landscapes.Born in 1882 in Neijing,China,he was the elder brother of the painter Zhang Daqian.In 1903,he traveled to Japan and participated in the activities of the underground resistance movement known as the “Tongmenghui” (Chinese United League).After returning to China,he remained active in revolutionary movements, and served as a member on the presidential consultative committee after the founding of the Republic of China.Following the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937,Zhang created a number of anti-Japanese paintings with strong nationalistic themes.
