Henri Louis Levasseur (French, 1853-1934), Hebe and the Eagle of Jupiterpatinated cast bronze, signed "H. Levasseur" in the casting, with F. Goldscheider foundry mark, numbered edition 132/921, depicting the Greek goddess, Hebe, seated with arms raised atop her father, Zeus (Jupiter), who appears in the guise of an eagle, mounted atop a marble plinth.19 1/4 in. (height of marble plinth)Henri Louis Levasseur was a French figural sculptor best known for his realistic depictions of historic figures, mythological figures, and religious themes. His sculptures are known for their dynamic naturalistic depictions of subjects which appear to be captured in mid-movement. Levasseur studied with Auguste Dumont, Gabriel Jules Thomas, and E. Planche. He won many awards during his lifetime, at both the Salon des Artistes Français and the Art Exposition in Paris.
