玉鸮以黄玉料雕琢，玉质细腻熟润，表面局部带有红沁。整体圆雕为鸮鸟造型，身体宽平，双翼铺展，尾凸出。正面浮雕简化的眼、嘴、爪，背面上端打一牛鼻穿孔。通身琢磨痕迹细腻清晰，非常典型。鸮，古时又叫“鸱”、“鸱鸺”、“逐魂鸟”、“猫王鸟”等，是红山文化一直到商代时都具备的宗族图腾崇拜。鸮在上古时期被认为是通神的动物，如仰韶文化有陶鸮尊，商代有铜鸮尊，把祭器做成鸮的形状，就是期望借助鸮来通达神灵。整体造型古朴大气，简练端庄，具有神秘感，实为早期玉雕收藏佩饰精品。
