二十九歲時，大師到密宗學院學習密乘生圓二次第及其小注。 三十歲時，大師立續部大誓願進行立宗辯論。不論從顯密哪方面發難，大師都能引經據典，對答如流，受到了衆人的欽佩和贊揚。 三十一歲時，大師在雪固謨寺聽密乘經疏和釋文，并向續部上師敬獻供品。與章嘉金剛持洛桑曲丹一起主持爲拉薩密宗殿新塑大威德、六臂護法、閻羅王三護法裝藏儀軌。大師請求密宗院上師準許他去山中修行。 三十三歲時，大師離開密宗院來到格培山修行。 三十四歲時，大師向三大寺僧衆詳授《菩提道次第廣論》和《文殊師利言教》。首次講授《菩提道次第論》時, 就出現了春雷初響、普降瑞雨等奇异的徵兆。大師赴色派密宗道場，在色派密宗上師貢覺亞培尊前求受格魯派所有耳傳秘訣。
