Portrait of a Nobleman, probably the marquis de la Martinière, bust length in a purple and gold robe Oil on canvas H: 80 x L: 64 cm Provenance: By descent from Jean de la Martinière (born in 1664) to Comtesse de B. This unrecorded and newly discovered version of the portrait of a gentleman identified as possibly the marquis de la Martinière is known through four other versions. Like ours, the best versions show a lozenge shaped scar in the middle of the forehead. As our version was owned by descendants of Jean de La Martinière ° 1646, this would give more certainty as to the traditional identification of the sitter. The posture, the garment and the wig are typical of Rigaud around 1710-1720 when the artist was at the height of his art.
