He was a pupil and assistant of Anton Raphael Mengs whose sister he married in 1765. He had ambitions as a history painter, but worked mainly as a portraitist, in a style very similar to Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787). Like Batoni, he painted many wealthy British and other continental visitors to Rome like Johann Joachim Winckelmann the great German aesthete and archaeologist. Medium Oil on canvas
