Alexander Nasmyth (Scottish 1758-1840) A view of a Castle and estuary with travellers resting in the foreground Oil on cradled panel 130 x 92cm (51 x 36 in.) Provenance:Berwick House, Shropshire It has been suggested that the view depicted in the present lot is one of Place House, Fowey, Cornwall (see, the engraving after Frederick Wilton Litchfield Stockdale, Place House, Fowey, Cornwall, pub. 1824) Medium Oil on cradled panel Condition Report The panel has been cradled. The varnish is very dirty and discoloured. There are two patched where the work appears to have started to have been previously cleaned (visible in catalogue illustration). There is a vertical crack running throughout the centre of the composition from the lower edge up to approx. half way up the composition (partially visible in catalogue illustration). Inspection under UV reveals evidence of some possible previous retouching but a thick varnish prevents proper examination. Would benefit from a clean.
