Circa 200-300 AD. An exquisite Roman ring of solid gold. It features a round-section hoop, expanded shoulders, and an oval bezel set with a carnelian intaglio. The bezel is finely carved with the left-facing figure of a Satyr. Ring possibly of a later period. 22kt gold. A satyr, also known as Silenus, is a male nature spirit with ears and a tail resembling those of a horse, as well a as a permanent, exaggerated erection. Early artistic representations include horse-like legs, but from the size century BC onwards became more often represented with human legs.Size: D: 15.8mm / US: 5 1/8 / UK: K; 22.9gProvenance: Central London private collection of Ancient Art and jewellery; acquired from an East Coast, US estate collection formed before 1979.
