A LARGE PAIR OF CLOISONNÉ VASES AND COVERS
China, late Qing dynasty (1644-1912). The decoration features colored enamels against a blue enamel ground, showing two caparisoned elephants and scholars; the shoulders with a band of apsaras amid clouds. Both with fine reticulated floral covers and bearing a seal mark to the underside.
Condition: Good condition with some wear and spare, partly filled losses to the enamels.
Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
