A MASSIVE SHADOW AGATE ‘FISHING VILLAGE’ SNUFF BOTTLE, LATE QING TO EARLY REPUBLIC China, 1900-1920. The slightly flattened globular body rising from an oval foot with recessed base to a broad neck with a small mouth, neatly carved in relief to one side with two men fishing amid pines and craggy rockwork, also with a fish and crashing waves, and to the other with a man walking along a bridge and an old man holding a cane below mountains, scrolling clouds, and houses. The interplay of black, bluish gray, and white shadings enhance the carving and offer an appealing composition.

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, a small nick to the neck, the stopper is lost.
Provenance: Canadian private estate, a family of doctors who resided in China between 1890 to 1960.
