AN OLD AGATE INTAGLIO SEAL OF A HORSE
Ancient region of Gandhara, 7-9th century. Small intaglio seal plate of oval shape, carved from a semi-translucent agate stone of a dark-chocolate color. With the silhouette of a horse with the head bent to the ground, as he were grazing on grass, engraved to the top.
Condition: Good condition with some expected, age-related wear and larger notches to the back side.
Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
