红丝石产于山东临朐，制砚研墨，膏润浮泛，凝墨如漆，存墨加盖则数日不干，与广东端砚、安徽歙砚、甘肃洮河砚并称为唐代四大名砚。后由于红丝石开采过量，宋之后已无石材产出，才使得山西的澄泥砚代替红丝石砚成为四大名砚之一。作品从侧面看层状岩特征明显，红黄相间，正面出现如树木年轮般红丝。砚台呈山形，线条流畅，形体敦厚，古朴之风浓郁。触摸之感如握美玉，并配以日本老盒与红木盖。盒内有日本学者对比此砚为宋代作品之考证，及对收藏者长尾雨山、山口蕙石的一些介绍。
