弥勒为梵文 Maitreya的音译，意译慈氏，象征怀慈悲之心。据传，此类弥勒佛象是依照五代时浙江奉化县岳林寺的布袋和尚契此(法号为“长汀子”)的相貌塑造的。契此强调要大肚能容，不要计较人世间的是非憎爱，要“宽却肚皮”、“豁开心地”，只要肚量大、心胸宽，遇到冤家也能与之和平相处，甚至还能由此悟道成佛，证得六度。以契此为原型，后人又加上了笑口常开的特征，从而形成矮身大肚、蹙鼻笑口的典型的弥勒佛形象。大肚弥勒寓神奇于平淡，示美好于丑拙，显庄严于诙谐，现慈悲于揶揄，代表了中华民族宽容、和善、智慧、幽默、快乐的精神。
