10th-12th century AD. An iron axehead with narrow neck and broad curved triangular blade; socket with lateral flanges and long curved rectangular extension to the rear. Cf. Kirpichnikov, A.N., Drevnerskoe Oruzie, II, Moscow-Leningrad, 1966, in Arkheologiia SSSR, vol. E1-36, especially axes nos.1,5, from ???????? and ??????? (pl.XIII), and no.6 (pl.XXII) from ?????? ????; Sedov, B.B., Finno-Ugri i Balti v Epokhi Srednevekovija, Moscow, 1987, pl.CXXIV, item 1. 330 grams, 18cm (7"). Ex California, A, collection formed since the late 1960s. European art market before the late 1990s. The axe seems to be a variation of type IV of the Kirpichnikov classification of the Eastern R Axes typology, and type Va of the Nadolski classification: battle axes with downwards blade, two pairs of side wings and an elongated cut-out butt. These axes appeared in the 10th century, and continued in the 10th-11th century. [No Reserve]
