2nd-1st millennium BC. A bronze multi-barbed and socketted harpoon, pierced for attachment to a wooden shaft. Cf. Yule, P., 'The Copper Hoards of Northern India' in Expedition Magazine. Penn Meum, 1997, 02 Dec 2021, no.1, 1997, pp.22-39, fig.12. 35.8 grams, 84mm high (3 1/4"). European art market in the 2000s. UK private collection. Property of a Surrey gentleman. The harpoon head shows similarities with the weapons brandished by the hunters in the Ind Valley graffito paintings in south-eastern Uttar Pradesh. Metal hoard implements from Haryana, included harpoons, so-called bars, and flat axes. Chemical analyses prove these implements were made of copper, not bronze. Recent discoveries at vario sites are shedding light on people who made these objects and aspects of their culture.
