A substantial bronze electrotype seal matrix die with seated figure holding a book; legend to the border '+ SIGILLVM GODGYÐE MONACHE DODATE' (the seal of Godgyth, a nun given [to God]); lightly incised to the reverse 'ivory seal of ... Godgyth nun ... 1000 AD' describing the original. Cf. Hinton, D.A., Gold and Gilt, Pots and Pins, Oxford, 2006, p.146; Karkov, C., The Art of Anglo-Saxon England, Woodbridge, 2016, p.131. 260 grams, 85mm high (3 1/2"). From the late Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister; from her collection formed 1960s-1990s. The original of this matrix is in ivory and was found at Wallingford, Oxfordshire. It is unual in having the matrix for a male named Godwine on one face and the above seal of Godgyð on the other. The original is in the British Meum. [No Reserve]
