6th century AD. A bronze button brooch of Avent's Class E(ii), with flange to the rim, inner collar, central helmetted mask with scaphoid eyes; remains of lug and catch to the reverse. Cf. Avent, R. & Evison, V.I., Anglo-Saxon Button Brooches in Archaeologia, vol.CVII, 1982, p.85. 2.8 grams, 16mm (1/2"). Found by the vendor's grandfather in West Ssex in the early 1990s. Property of a West Ssex, UK, gentleman.
