A Khazar copper-alloy beltprising eleven elements: two rectangular strap-retainers consisting of an openwork plaque with chip-carved vine decoration; five trefoil-shaped openwork mounts fitted with two-fastening pins, terminating in a loop; two triangular mounts holding a cabochon, pierced to accept fastening rivets; two stylised bird-shaped mounts. 23.3 grams total, 14-20mm wide (1/2 - 3/4"). Private collection of Mr M. B., Mainz, Germany, 1990s. Property of a London binessman. The ornamental style of these belts were developed and formed under the in?uence of Islamic art and the ?ne metal-working techniques of the Khazar Khaganate. The mercenary Islamic or Mlim slave-Ghulam soldiers in the Khazar Empire were expected to wear distinguishing articles of attire (earrings and/or belts of servitude) attesting their stat. [11]
