12th century AD. A fragment of a glass roundel bearing an eagle and hunting hound in relief, iridescent surfaces. See the image of an eagle killing a hare in the mosaics of the Royal Palace in Palermo, 12th century AD, in Kitzinger, E., I mosaici del periodo normanno in Sicilia, Palermo, 2000, fig.177; see also Gabrieli, F. & Scerrato, U., Gli Arabi in Italia, Milano, 1989, figs.654 and pp.482ff. 19.2 grams, 53mm wide (2"). London art market, 1979. Property of a gentleman living in central London. The theme of the representation of hares on glass can be found in Islamic art, which, in Southern Italy, became aponent of Norman art after the conquest of Sicily. Eagles and hares are stillmon in Swabian ceramics from Lucera until the middle of the 13th century. The roundel probably decorated a splendid vessel or bottle in Arabo-Norman style. [No Reserve]
