13th-14th century AD. A bone chess piece, likely a pawn, worked from a roughly cylindrical section of bone with a slightly inverted apex, hollowed, polished and engraved with two parallel circumferential bands towards the base and four sub-rectangular bands terminating in dot-in-ring motifs around the neck; broad, flat base. Cf. The Portable Antiquities Scheme, record id. LON-55F862, for similar dated 13th-14th century AD; cf. Egan, G., The Medieval Hoehold Daily Living c.1150-1450, London, 2010, item 960, for very similar. 14.7 grams, 27mm high (1"). Acquired on the UK antiques market between 1974-1985.
