Late 16th century AD. A gold and agate pendantprising a gold frame with ten openwork lobes arranged along the edge, alternated with small raised bosses, the centre covered with turquoise paste and remains of gilding. 2.93 grams, 36mm including loop (1 1/2"). Acquired 1980s. Property of a Suffolk gentleman. Elements of this pendant recall vario pendants of late 16th century AD, some from the collection of Anna Maria Louisa de Medici, the Electress Palatine (Hackenbroch & Sframeli, 1988, no. 3"). This openwork style can be connected with Flemish goldsmiths active in Frankenthal, Germany, at the end of the 16th century. The gold loop at the bottom of the mount may originally have had a pearl pendant spended from it.
