1st-18th century AD. A substantial silver handle with four-band braid detailing in two lines to each face; five applied lead(?) discs to the upper face each with an appliqué silver profile portrait bt cut from a Roman denari; spension ring to the broken end. 84 grams, 14.5cm (5 3/4"). From the late Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister; from her collection formed early 1960s-1990s. Several of the portraits resemble Roman emperors - e.g. the second from the top is bearded with toled hair and may be based on coinage images of Hadrian. The age wear prevents secure identification.
