Dated 15 January 1833 AD. An 18ct gold memento mori ring with D-section hoop ornamented with foliage and a stylised flower head at each shoulder, oval bezel set with an onyx(?) cameo gemstone bearing an urn with the hoop and bezel interior engraved: 'The Gift of EA / In Memory of Jas Armitage Obt 15 Jan 1833 / At 70' in three lines; hallmarked for London assay, William IV, date letter Gothic B (for 1837) with maker mark 'SC.MC' in a rectangular cartouche. See Oman, Charles, British Rings 800-1914, London, 1974, pls.90A and 91C for similar depictions of urns on 19th century mourning rings. 1.99 grams, 21.05mm overall, 16.52mm internal diameter (approximate size British K, A 5 1/4, Europe 9.95, Japan 9) (1"). Found whilst searching with the e of a metal detector in Essex. This ring is hallmarked for the year 1837 although the person remembered died in 1833; memento mori jewels were often made and given some time after the deathmemorated and this ring is unual in bearing a full set of hallmarks.
