A polished black basalt axe head from the Papua New Guinea Highlands, with a tapering, lentoid-section body and convex cutting edge; old label to one face: New Guinea NG 13 F.S Clark collection; handwritten identification text to reverse: R. Clarke collection, UK. Property of a London gentleman. Dr Hugh Alderson Fawcett (1891-1982) built up an important collection of ancient implements, weapons and ornaments that eventually numbered some 8000 items. The bulk of this collection is now in the Bristol Meum and Art Gallery. Mr F.S. Clark ran the Old Curiosity Shoppe, The Quadrant, Onslow Street, Guildford, Surrey, in the 1970s-1980s selling all kinds of collectables. A passionate collector and field-walker, he built up a fine collection of antiquities, notable for British prehistoric items, a significant number of which he obtained through trade with Dr H.A.
