A William IV West Country blue painted truncheon, circa 1835, inscribed IV / W.R above a Crown and two sets of arms: first below a marquess's coronet are those of Thynne, (Marquesses of Bath), Quarterly: 1st and 4th, Barry (horizontally divided) often Or (Gold) and Sable (Black); 2nd and 3rd, Argent (Silver), a Lion rampant tail nowed (knotted) and erect Gules (Red). The lower below a baron's coronet are those of Boyle, (Earls of Cork and Orrery) Per bend embattled Argent (Silver) and Gules (Red))', 37.5cm longThat these arms are below a baron's coronet suggests it refers to the Boyles' British barony (Baron Boyle of Marston) rather than their Irish earldoms. The Boyles' seat of Marston in Somerset was less than ten miles from the Marquess of Bath's sea at Longleat, which is the likely area of the truncheon's origin.
