A BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN BOWL WITH FLOWERS AND BUTTERFLIES, QIANLONG PERIOD
China, 18th century. The deep sides molded with lappets, rising from a tall foot to a foliate café-au-lait glazed rim, painted to the interior in underglaze cobalt blue with a central peony below a floral diapered band, the exterior decorated with reserves in relief enclosing alternating leafy lotus and a scene with two figures, all amid scattered butterflies and floral sprays.
Provenance: From the Collection of James E. Breece III, New York, USA, and thence by descent. The base with an old paper label inscribed with ink: ‘This bowl held the water with which the children of M. (…) were Christened’.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing flaws such as minimal pitting, spotting, and a short firing crack to the foot. With two glaze flakes to the lip.
