He ranked first in the Imperial Examination in 1874, the thirteenth year of Qing Dynasty Emperor Tongzhi. Since then, he successively served as Director of Imperial Academy and Provincial Director of Education in Shan Dong. He was good at calligraphy, especially in Running Script.
