A Chinese reticulated jade censer dating from the 18th century with a wood stand. The censer is elaborately carved with flowers on the body and handles, and it features a Buddhist knot and flaming wheel on either side. Dimensions are: 2 1/2 inches tall X 6 3/4 inches wide X 5 inches deep, 6.35 cm X 17.15 cm X 12.70 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Natural seam to the jade, numerous minor chips and breakages. A reminder that all lots are sold as-is. We have sought to record the changes in the condition of this piece after its initial manufacture as diligently as possible; however, as stated in our terms, condition reports are statements of opinion and not representations or warranties. Oakridge Auction Gallery bears no responsibility for any error or omission. Provenance: From a private collection in Dallas, Texas. Notes: This opulent jade censer contests the idea that less is more. Its walls are densely carved with a rich tapestry of reticulated flowers. The swath of curling stems and full leaves continues up to the rim of the censer, where a cluster of blooming roses forms a pair of handles. Nestled among the flowers are several of the 8 Buddhist Emblems, including the flaming wheel of Dharma, a conch shell, a parasol, and a Buddhist knot. These mystical symbols, when rendered as they are in creamy, lustrous jade, give the lavish censer a spiritual air, but even they cannot humble it. If not for such ornate decoration, this censer might evoke the spirit of Mughal style jade "marriage bowls," which were common during the reign of Qianlong. They, too, are round and shallow with handles parallel to the mouth, and they usually come in pairs, as this censer may have originally, as suggested by the absence of the remaining half of the Buddhist Emblems. However, the ornamentation of the Mughal style, while beautiful, was restrained and regular, with patterns conforming to the form of the piece. In this piece, by contrast, the form almost disappears under the weight of its bountiful floral carvings. It is an extravagant piece, and it does not sacrifice any of its beauty in its predilection for the excess. Similar jade censers are currently housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City under accession numbers 02.18.551a, b and 21.175.83a, b, as well as in the Palace Museum in Beijing under accession number 00101292.
