He was a British scientific author, barrister and pioneer of road transport. He succeeded to the Baronetcy on the death of his uncle: Sir David SALOMONS (1797-1873), the first baronet, who used a single crest with his arms, the principal crest on the seal. The baronetcy was created in 1869 but became extinct after the second baronet's death. The home at Broomhill is now a museum. David Lionel SALOMONS later GOLDSMID-STERN-SALOMONS the son of Philip SALOMONS of Brighton and Emma, daughter of Jacob Eliezer MONTEFIORE of Barbados. He married Laura STERN daughter of Baron Hermann de STERN of Portugal and Julia daughter of Aaron Asher GOLDSMID, brother of Sir Isaac GOLDSMID, by whom he had one son and four daughters. Their son David Reginald Philip SALOMONS commanded the 3rd Kent Fortress Field Company during World War 1 and was killed with his men when HMS Hythe was sunk during the Gallipoli Campaign. In 1899 the then David Lionel SALOMONS assumed the additional surnames and arms of Goldsmid and Stern. As a result the extracted crests displayed on the seal corresponds to the period 1899-1925.
