|1948年初中毕业后即跟随父母学艺，于五十年代初即拜当代紫砂泰斗顾景舟为师，为顾老师第一弟子。1975-1976年入中央工艺美院进修。他富有艺术天才，功底扎实，善复制传统产品，也精于创新，工艺造型独具匠心，以冰裂纹装饰见长，作品似冰如玉，尤善作各式微型小盆，每有手迹，均称“汉棠盆”，为上海盆栽界珍藏。
