The lips are painted with red colour, the outline of the upper eyelids and the pupils are painted in black. The woman gives an impression of elegance. She is wearing a cross-collared long dress, tied under the breasts with ribbons and falling down to the ground in straight soft fold. Long sleeves with wide openings are reaching down to the ankles. At the bottom the turned-up toecaps of the shoes are visible. With her left hand the woman is lifting her dress a little bit. Her right hand is hidden in the sleeve, with a hole for the insertion of an object which is now lost. Her hair is swept up in a fashionable chignon and covered by a cap with ear lappets. This kind of warm cap was a luxurious headgear fashioned for women of non-Han nationalities who lived in the north and west of China. There have been found many figurines and images with hats like this in tombs that date from the periods of Northern Wei, Sui and Tang. Women represented similar to this one, are regarded as musicians or dancers. Some of them are depicted with a slightly protruding belly.
