Earthenware, paintChina, Western Han dynasty (206 BC to 9 AD)Dimensions: Height 62 cm by 23 cm by 12 cmWeight: 4.6 kilogramsA large statue of a male servant made of gray earthenware with remains of red and black cold colours. The surface is encrusted with earth. The man is wearing an outer robe with long sleeves hanging down to his thighs. The left collar is overlapping the right one. At the crossed collar and at the bottom of the back part, the robe exposes two layers of undergarments. The joined hands in front of the belly are hidden by long inner sleeves. The robe flares out below the knees to create a base in the shape of a trumpet. At the bottom, the upturned square toecaps of his shoes appear in outlines. The dress has traces of patterns in red and black reaching down to the knee. The base part is without paint. The man is depicted standing in a quiet pose. His headgear has a top in the form of a board which looks like it is made from bamboo. The strings that used to be fixed to the headdress and should be tied under the chin are not present. This kind of headgear is called ‘changguan’ and was worn by officials in the Qin period (259 to 210 BC) and Western Han period. Two examples of wooden tomb figures, with clothing similar to this earthenware figurine, were excavated from the site of Mawangdui near Chang’an, the capital city of Western Han, and are now placed in the Hunan Museum in Changsha. The two wooden figures were found in the tomb of Marquise of Dai, who died in 168 BC. They differ from other tomb figurines in their large size, their facial expressions, their headgears and their dresses made of silk. Under their feet there is an incised name ‘guanren’ which means that these officials were the heads of the slaves and maids in Lady Dai’s tomb. Wooden or pottery figurines of servants and maids took the place of human victims.AUCTION DATE:Saturday 23rd April 202211:00 - 13:00Preview:15. April - 17.
