PAIR OF JADE PERFUMERS (HUAXUN)Calcite marble, woodChinaDimensions: Height 225 cm by 145 cm, diameter 90 cmWeight: around 400 kilograms eachA set of two almost identical vessels for perfuming, carved from green calcite marble. The monumental perfumers areposed of square and round parts. There are five sections that fit together: base, middle part, body, cover and top. The hemispherical bases, decorated with low relief ornaments of stylized bats, support the middle parts which consist of two square bowls one above the other. The bowls are provided with four loose-ring dragon handles and are carved with lobed openings enclosing floral scrolls in openwork. The large round vessels of the perfumers are decorated with low reliefs of dragons that are playing with flaming pearls. On the sides there are two large beast-shaped handles with movable rings. The rims of the bodies show a border of bats done in relief. The domed covers are carved in openwork lotus design and have four lobed panels enclosing figures of elephants. The tops areposed of three stacked pieces: a square bowl, a dish and an animal group. The bowls are carved with lobed openings framing dragons and have six loose-ring handles. A large coiled dragon in association with four elephant heads, holding rings in their trunks, crown the perfumers. The bowls of the middle parts and the tops are similar to models of the early Qing period (for a jade incense burner and cover dated to ca. 1650 AD, see Stanley Charles Nott, Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages, London 1962, plate XLI), though the shape of the two vessels is based on a prototype of the 1990, which is known as ‘Containing fragrance and gathering good luck’ (han xiang ju rui). The original jade perfumer measures 96 cm and was carved by highly skilled craftsmen in Beijing.
