The square basis on bracket feet supports a square terrace with a small square-section chapel in the center. Four stairs lead to the double doors on each side of the building that has just four round pillars at the corners and four doors at each side which can be opened. Above the domed ceiling of the chapel there is a circular balcony with a smaller round room with double doors and round pillars. The large pyramidal roof is made in the shape of a pagoda roof, with accurately depicted brackets, beams, tiles and edges. On top of the roof there is a mast (sôrin) supporting nine rings and a flaming jewel. All parts of the pagoda are superbly decorated with incised patterns of overlapping circles (po), hexagons (kikko), swastika (sayagata) and waves. Figures of lions in motion are guarding the stairs. Inside the chapel there is a gilt-bronze seated figure of Buddha added. A post of one of the rails is fastened with glue. The rare miniature pagoda can be separated into four different parts. According to an inscription on a plate fixed to the fundamental base, this reliquary was made in the year 1698. The inscription reads ‘Genroku jûichi sai tsuchinoe tora rokugatsu hi sharitô shi Miyajima Hanshirô Fujiwara Masatsugu saku kore Rakuyô-jû’ (Made by the Master of Reliquary Miyajima Hanshirô and Fujiwara Masatsugu from Rakuyô [i.e. Kyôto] in the sixth month of the year tsuchinoe tora, eleventh year of Genroku era).A one-storey pagoda set on a square base made by Miyajima Hanshirô and Fujiwara Masatsugu in the year 1689 was sold on 15 April 2016 at Christie’s in New York, An Inquiring Mind: American Collecting of Japanese and Korean Art, lot 10.Purchased: 23rd March 1998 from Dr. Robert Bigler , Zurich , Switzerland.The buying price was 190.000 CHFAUCTION DATE:Saturday 23rd April 202211:00 - 13:00Preview:15.
