19th century boxwood netsuke of the Zen Patriarch Daruma sitting in meditative pose enveloped in his monastic robe with cape. Great carving, fantastic face with wonderful stipple work indicating his beard, beautiful flow to the lines of his robe, superb staining and patina. Differently sized himotoshi lined with natural and green stained staghorn. Signed SHUMIN on the bottom - Hara Shumin was an excellent artist and is listed on p. 995 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Wonderful sculpture.
