EDWARD GURDEN DALZIEL (1849-1888) AT COOMBE SYDENHAM, WEST SOMERSET [sic] Signed with initials and dated 70, inscribed on labels on the backboard, watercolour and bodycolour 83 x 58cm. * Dalziel exhibited `An Old House in Somerset` at The Royal Academy in 1871 (no.672) Provenance: Formerly the home of the Sydenham family who gained it after the dissolution of the monasteries,be was once a daughter house of Cleeve Abbey. The monks' stew ponds are still there in one of the nearby valleys. The house was the home of Elizabeth Sydenham who married Sir Francis Drake. Later it passed to the Musgrove family and then was purchased by the Notley family. The house was purchased by the vendor's parents in 1951 in a very dilapidated state and it was restored with help from the Ministry of Works as a house of historic interest. It was sold by them in 1963. There is a glass by Laurence Whister in the Taunton Museum recognising the skill and dedication involved in the lengthy task of its restoration. See lots 588 and 653
