FELICE SANTOLINI (ITALIAN, BORN CIRCA 1800)TWELVE STUDIES OF SIBYLS AFTER RAPHAEL SANZIO'S HOURS OF THE NIGHT AND DAYBodycolour and pencil (unframed)Signed (lower right) and inscribed Rafaello Sanzio Del. Inv. (lower left) and with titles (lower centre)46 x 34.6cm (18 x 13½ in.) (12)The twelve sheets depict twelve allegorical figures referring to the six hours of day and six hours of night, their imagery supposedly based on the work of the famous Renaissance artist, Raphael. By the late 19th century, the fresco paintings in the Sala Borgia at the Vatican that these drawings and many prints were supposedly based upon no longer existed and their origins remain a mystery, though they have been consistently attributed to Raphael. Each sheet features an allegorical figure of a graceful woman draped in a gown, holding an item or animal suggesting a particular time of day or night. Each incorporates a predella in the lower border, respectively depicting scenes of animals also relating to the times of the day and night.材质_1: Bodycolour and pencil (unframed)
