UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE (1797-1858) Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1838UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE (1797-1858)Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1838An oban yoko-e print of Suhara from the series Kisokaido rokujuku tsugi (The 69 Stations on the Kiso Road) depicting travellers sheltering from a sudden downpour under the portico of a small wood wayside shrine between trees, in the interior two itinerant monks, their heads hidden by the basket-like hats, one praying, the other sitting with his legs crossed, a porter squatting in front of them, behind him a pilgrim recording his presence on of the support posts of the shrine, two other porters hurrying towards them, silhouettes of other travellers protecting themselves under straw matting in the distance, with publisher's seal Kinjudo and bottom right corner with the collector's seal of Henri Vever; signed Hiroshige ga with seal Ichiryusai. 21.2cm x 33.4cm (8 3/8in x 13 1/16in).Provenance:Henri Vever (1854-1942) Collection.Impressions differ widely but the present lot exhibits features and extant, vivid colours associated with earlier impressions; compare a similar impression in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, accession number: JP2868.
