Anonymous (early 20th century) depicting Avalokitesvara, the eleven headed Bodhisattva wearing rich robes and jewellery, standing erect on a lotus, his primary hands in anjali mudra, his secondary hands holding bow, water-vessel, lotus, rosary, cakra and in varada mudra, his thousand tertiary arms arranged in a fan behind, flanked below by diminutive figures of White and Green Taraink and colour on silk, picture size 102cm x 67cm?The story is told that Avalokitesvara wanted to save as many souls as he could from the endless cycle of death and rebirth, but his two arms were insufficient for the task, breaking under the strain.
