A discoid mirror with concentric geometric borders and sceneposed of horse-drawn carriages and robed figures, possibly representing the Queen Mother of the West and the Lord of the East; domed centre with piercing. Cf. The Metropolitan Museum, accession number 17.52, for similar. 810 grams, 17 cm wide (6 3.4 in."). Acquired 1970-1999. London collection of the late Mr S.M., thence by descent. By the Han dynasty period, mirrors had gained status as important grave goods; their reflective surface was believed to bring life and light into the darkness of the tomb.Condition Report: Fine condition.
