A substantial gold ring with plaited shank, four large pellets to a deep oval bezel, set with a flat carnelian gemstone bearing Hebrew inscription '??? ??? ??? ???', a Kabbalistic acronym for the text of Genesis 49.22, associated with fertility and the protection of children, small stylised flowers in the field; after the antique, rustic construction. Cf.pare the amulet in the Magnes collection, Berkeley, acc.no 67.1.1.3. 27.63 grams, 31.10 mm overall, 20.31 mm internal diameter (approximate size British U, USA 10, Europe 22.52, Japan 21) (1 1/4 in."). Private collection of Edouard Roditi (1910-1992) surrealist, Author and Poet, Nobel Laureate for Literature; thence by descent. Apanied by a previous cataloguing slip including provenance. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is apanied by AIAD certificate no.11165-187591. Edouard Roditi was an interpreter at the Nuremburg International Military Tribunal. In 1961 he published the English translation of Yashar Kemel's 'Memed, My Hawk'.
