17th-18th century A.D. A gold posy ring with D-section hoop, interior inscribed 'A true friends gift' in script, followed by a goldsmith's mark 'WF' in a rectangular cartouche. Cf. The British Museum, museum number AF.1190, for this inscription in a very similar script. 3.53 grams, 20.75 mm overall, 18.07 mm internal diameter (approximate size British P, USA 7 1/2, Europe 16.23, Japan 15) (3/4 in."). Acquired on the UK antiques market between 1974-1985. Albert Ward collection (part 3), Essex, UK. Apanied by an old handwritten title card. A number of 18th century goldsmith's marksprising Gothic letters 'WF' in a rectangular cartouche and very similar to the mark on this ring, are present in the British Museum and on the Portable Antiquities Scheme Database.
